BerthTime in your AI assistant

Ask your AI assistant where your containers are.

Connect BerthTime to ChatGPT or Claude once, then ask about your shipments in plain words: where a container is, what arrives this week, what is running late. No dashboards, no copy-pasting reference numbers.

Works with ChatGPT and Claude. You sign in with your BerthTime account: no key to copy.

Ask it like you would ask a colleague

Example questions and the kind of answer you get. The data below is made up for illustration.

  • You: Where is container MSCU1234566 right now?

Assistant: MSCU1234566 is on board the vessel, sailing from Shanghai to Rotterdam. It left Shanghai on 12 October. The carrier expects it in Rotterdam on 8 November, two days later than first planned.

  • You: Which of my containers arrive this week?

Assistant: Three shipments are due in the next 7 days: one in Hamburg on Tuesday, one in Antwerp on Thursday and one in Felixstowe on Saturday. The Antwerp one is for your customer reference PO-4711.

  • You: Is anything delayed by more than two days?

Assistant: Yes, two shipments. The booking to Los Angeles now arrives 5 days later than first announced, and the bill of lading to Santos 3 days later. Everything else is on schedule.

  • You: What has happened to my Felixstowe shipment so far?

Assistant: It was loaded in Ningbo on 2 October, transshipped in Singapore on 11 October and is now at sea. Next step: arrival in Felixstowe, expected on Saturday.

Set up in a few steps

A few minutes, no technical skills needed. You need a BerthTime account and an account with your AI assistant.

ChatGPT

Available

On chatgpt.com in a web browser. Once added, it also works in the ChatGPT apps.

  1. Turn on developer mode

In ChatGPT, open Settings, then Apps, then Advanced settings, and switch on Developer mode. Outside services you add yourself need it.

  2. Create the BerthTime app

Still in Settings, Apps, click Create. Name it BerthTime, paste the server address below, choose OAuth as authentication, confirm that you trust the app and click Create.

    https://berthtime.com/api/v1/mcp
  3. Sign in to BerthTime

ChatGPT opens a BerthTime page. Log in, pick your company (or all your companies) and choose Read only (the safe choice) or Read and write, then click Allow.

  4. Use it in a chat

In a new chat, click “+”, choose BerthTime (under More or Developer mode) and ask, for example “Which of my containers arrive this week?”.

Which ChatGPT plans have developer mode changes often. OpenAI lists Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces; some Plus and Pro accounts have it too, sometimes limited to read-only tools. If you don't see the switch, your plan or your workspace admin doesn't allow it yet.

ChatGPT Business, Enterprise or Edu: an admin may have to allow developer mode, and an app you create stays private to you until an admin publishes it for the workspace.

Claude

Available

On claude.ai and in the Claude desktop app.

  1. Add BerthTime to Claude

In Claude, open Settings, then Connectors, and click “Add custom connector”. Name it BerthTime, paste the server address below and click Add.

    https://berthtime.com/api/v1/mcp
  2. Connect and sign in

Click Connect next to BerthTime. A BerthTime page opens: log in, pick your company (or all your companies), choose Read only (the safe choice) or Read and write, then click Allow.

  3. Turn it on and ask

In a new chat, click “+”, open Connectors and switch BerthTime on. Then ask your question, for example “Which of my containers arrive this week?”.

Claude Team or Enterprise: an owner adds the connector once for the organisation, then each person clicks Connect and signs in with their own BerthTime account. The free plan allows one custom connector.

Prefer an API key? When you add the connector, choose no sign-in and under Request headers add the name Authorization with the value Bearer followed by a BerthTime API key (Settings, AI assistants).

Authorization: Bearer bt_live_YOUR_KEY

Both assistants rename their menus from time to time. If a screen looks different, look for “Apps” or “Connectors” in the settings.

Developer tools such as Claude Code, Cursor and VS Code work too: the AI assistants page in BerthTime has a ready-made snippet for each.

What it can and can't do

It can

  • Find a shipment by container, bill of lading or booking number, or by your own reference.
  • Tell you the carrier's ETA, whether it has slipped, and an estimate based on the vessel's position.
  • List what arrives soon and what is delayed.
  • Walk you through the history of a shipment: loading, transshipment, departure, arrival.
  • With read and write access: start tracking a new number, refresh a shipment, create a share link or contact our support for you.

It can't

  • Change anything when you gave it read-only access.
  • See the shipments of companies you did not give it access to, except the ones a partner chose to share with you on BerthTime.
  • Book freight, contact carriers or see your emails and documents.
  • Know more than BerthTime does: answers use the latest data from the carrier, which BerthTime refreshes automatically.

AI assistants can misread or summarise wrongly. For an important date, check the shipment in BerthTime.

Safe by design

  • Only the companies you choose

When you sign in, you choose one company or all the companies you belong to. The assistant sees only their shipments, nothing else in BerthTime, and always says which company it is using.

  • Read-only by default

Choose Read only when you connect: the assistant can then look things up but never add, change or archive anything. Only admins and owners can give write access.

  • Switch it off anytime

Disconnect the app in Settings, AI assistants (or revoke its API key). It stops working immediately. Each person connects with their own account.

  • Every request is logged

Requests are rate-limited and recorded in your company's audit log, like any other use of the BerthTime API.

When the assistant reads your shipments, that information goes to the AI provider you use (OpenAI for ChatGPT, Anthropic for Claude) and is handled under your agreement with them. Check your AI account's data settings if that matters to your company.

Questions

Do I need to be technical?

No. You paste one address into ChatGPT or Claude and sign in with your BerthTime account. After that you just type questions.

Which AI assistants work?

ChatGPT (on chatgpt.com, with developer mode: Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces and some Plus and Pro accounts) and Claude (on claude.ai and in the Claude desktop app, including the free plan, which allows one custom connector). Developer tools that support remote MCP servers, such as Claude Code, Cursor and VS Code, work too.

Does it cost extra?

Not on the BerthTime side: asking questions is included in every plan. Starting to track a new number through the assistant counts like a shipment added in the dashboard. Your AI assistant's own subscription is separate.

Can the assistant change or delete my shipments?

Only if you give it read and write access when you connect (admins and owners only), and even then it can only start tracking, refresh, share or archive shipments (archived shipments keep their history). With read-only access it can only look things up.

Can my colleagues use it?

Yes. Each colleague connects their own ChatGPT or Claude and signs in with their own BerthTime account. Team members get read-only access; admins and owners can also allow changes.

What is MCP?

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that lets AI assistants use outside services. BerthTime runs an MCP server, which is what your assistant connects to. You don't need to know more than that.

Do I need an API key?

Not for ChatGPT or Claude: they sign in with your BerthTime account. API keys are for developer tools and scripts, and as an alternative in Claude.
